Other Activities

We know that skiing and snowboarding isn't for everyone or perhaps you just want a day off from the mountain. There are plenty of things to keep you occupied for the whole week!

Beautiful mountain scenery awaits at a pace more likely to conjure up sightings of chamois and chevreuils. Cross Country Skiing

Getting Away from the Crowds & Back to Skiing Basics

Easy to learn and great exercise, this form of skiing can be taken as slow or fast as you like - the trails are mostly flat so your speed depends on how energetic you want to be!

There are around 50km of cross-country skiing routes in Alpe d'Huez which are groomed for the classic (in parallel ruts) or skating style. These are made up of a track called the Brandes Loop (near the altiport) which is considered the easiest, a blue 10km loop called the Poutran and a red 20km track known as the Loop of the Lakes, which is the hardest of them all. You can access these loops if you're staying in Oz or Vaujany via the ski lifts.

The tranquility of cross country (also known as Nordic) skiing is perfect for anyone who enjoys peace and quiet, or finds the downhill pistes too crowded or too steep. It is a great form of aerobic exercise and one can be as energetic or slow as you like, while the relaxed pace makes it a more tranquil way to enjoy the surroundings!  If you have a vehicle at hand then there are lots of other little resorts dotted around.

Dog Sledging

Fancy seeing the mountain scenery but not on those slippery planks called skis/snowboard? Alpe d’Huez offers the beautiful and relaxing Nordic adventure with a team of huskies. The routes taken consist of pedestrian trekking areas and look out points, you will be instructed on how to command the dogs with specific words such as the classic ‘Mush’!

You have the choice of sitting down in the sled or being at the helm, be warned though you must hold on tight! This is a very popular non skiing activity so please book at least 48hours in advance.

30-50€ for adults and 20-40€ for children.

Snowmobile rides

Discover some alpine fun at 2100m at the mid station DMC.  Those who enjoy speed will love riding a powerful snowmobile (like a motorbike with caterpillar tracks) around Alpe d'Huez. Enjoy the different dimensions of driving; carving turns, accelerating in a straight line, ascents and descents. Snowmobiles are a great way to explore Alpe d'Huez especially as you get to ride them when the resort is at its quietest. Disappear into the empty snow fields near the Lac Besson on your scooter with your own guide. Remember to wrap up warmly especially if you go after dark, and bring goggles if there is powder.

Paragliding

If you’ve never tried paragliding before (or maybe you’re not entirely sure what it is!) then Alpe d’Huez is a great place to learn how to fly. Known as “parapenting” in France, today there are a number of clubs and organisations in the area whose sole purpose is to get you flying. So, if it is something that you have always fancied trying, then give it a go whilst on a Ski Peak holiday.

For more paragliding adventures you can visit Venosc, just under 40 minutes away at the base of Les Deux Alps.

History

The Alpine Wildlife and Minerals Museum at Bourg d'Oisans

In an original, distinctive area under the eaves of the St Laurent Church, come and see the largest collection of alpine minerals in France. The highlight is the most beautiful quartz in the world from the famous La Gardette mine, but the museum also houses an exceptional variety of minerals, which are a testimony to the rich mineralogical heritage of Oisans.

A zoological section displays Alpine wildlife, featuring over 140 different species in an amazingly lifelike display in which each animal is depicted in a reconstitution in its natural environment. This exhibition is produced in partnership with the Ecrins National Park.
